Theater and music
The palace continues theatre traditions of the princes Yusupov who invited such celebrities as P.Viardot, F.Liszt, K.Schumann, F.Shaliapin, L.Sobinov and others to perform on the stage of the Palace Theatre
Palace Theatre is the most attractive concert stage of the palace.
Despite of the small sizes, the Yusupov’s «Temple of Art» has all the attributes of the real theatrical space: stalls, circles, prince box, orchestra pit and even the chairs of the end of XIX century. All original elements of furniture are carefully kept and are in use. The curtain and scenery till now rise and fall manually. Concerts of classical music, opera performances, classical ballets scenes on the stage of the Palace Theatre of the Yusupovs are already well-known for public. For the first time for many years especially for the tiny stage of the Yusupovs Palace Theatre the choreographer Georgy Kovtun, Honored Arts Worker, has staged a ballet performance. It was based on music by Donizetti and Italian commedia «dell’arte» plot. The interior of the theatre decorated in traditions of XVIII century serves as a ready scenery.
The irreproachable acoustics of the White Column Hall - the biggest in the palace – are worth mentioning. The ceiling of the hall is made of wood that provides fine acoustics properties. It was here where for the first time in February of 1836 the rehearsals of the opera by M.I.Glinka «Life for the Tsar», ancestor of the Russian opera music, took place. Large symphonic orchestras, jazz music and romances resound perfectly well here.
The best pieces of music continue to be heard within these walls. Orchestras conducted by Y.Temirkanov, S.Gorkovenko, "Êremlin" orchestra, «Chamber Soloists of Saint Petersburg» ensemble, soloists of Mariinsky Theatre, Musorgsky Theatre and State Conservatory had several opportunities to estimate advantages of this magnificent concert hall.
All variety of musical culture is displayed in concert season of the Yusupov Palace on the Moika embankment.
